Seasonal work might not necessarily be in the industry that you want to work in, but it will help you to meet new people and learn transferrable skills. It’s also a great way to earn money in time for Christmas.

Group of people

The people that you meet and the employers that you work for might also be able to help you in the future. You will gain valuable work experience and will have a referee for any future jobs you apply for.

Taking on temporary seasonal work also shows that you are keen to work and if you make a good impression, you never know where it might lead. Your employer could be so pleased with your work – it could turn into something more permanent.

It’s important to make sure you keep track of any new skills you learn and include them on your CV – it could make you more attractive to potential future employers at interview.

Here’s some useful transferable skills you can add to your CV:

  • Reliability – make sure you mention excellent time-keeping, turning up to work on time is a valuable quality.
  • Following instructions – if you pick things up quickly, don’t forget to mention it.
  • Dealing well with pressure/deadlines – some jobs are long with unsociable hours or tight deadlines. Clearly explain how you deal with pressure.
  • Team worker – give good examples of how you’ve worked well as part of a team. In most jobs you will have to work with other temporary and permanent staff and this is a good skill to have.
  • Attention to detail – if you can work accurately and efficiently, it’s always good to mention it.
  • Enthusiasm – this will go a long way to making a good impression on future employers.

What jobs are available?

In the run up to Christmas there are usually some great job opportunities in the industrial industry. More warehouse jobs such as pickers, packers and delivery drivers will be available as businesses get set for one of the busiest periods of the year.
