Most drivers will know that when you’ve been on the road for hours, neck pain can be a real problem.

Having good neck and shoulder movement is crucial for LGV Drivers, particularly when you need to check your mirrors and perform parking manoeuvres. If your shoulders and neck are tight, not only will it limit your movement, but it could also result in headaches and migraines. It’s no joke if you’ve got a full day of driving ahead!

You can avoid muscle tension in your neck and shoulders by doing a few simple stretching exercises – either in the cab or outside if you’re stretching your legs. Try these to get you started:

  • Lift your right arm to a 90 degree angle from your body and stretch your fingers to a point. At the same time, drop your head to the left and stretch out your neck muscles. Hold for 10-15 seconds. Repeat on the other side.
  • Pull your head down until your neck touches your chest – hold for 10-15 seconds. Tilt your head backwards and look up at the roof of your cab – hold for 10-15 seconds.
  • Rotate your head in a circular motion, stretching out all the muscles – do this slowly so that you don’t make yourself dizzy. Repeat 2-3 times, changing direction each time.
  • Lower your head to the left to meet your left shoulder – hold for 10-15 seconds. Repeat on your right side.

Not only will these exercises stretch out your muscles, they’re also a great way to strengthen your neck. And if you’ve got some tips of your own, share them with us on our Facebook or Twitter pages.
